Flywheel
The flywheel bolts to the crankshaft and carries the clutch on manual cars or the flexplate for the torque converter on automatics. It also carries the starter ring gear. Overheating from clutch slip scores or cracks the surface, and worn ring-gear teeth cause starter grinding.
